Cooper R. Benson, MD, followed in his father’s footsteps and has focused his career on helping others as a urologist. Benson is not new to UT Physicians, as he completed his urology training at UTHealth Houston and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in genitourinary reconstructive surgery at Columbia University and was previously an assistant professor at Tulane University in the department of urology.
“My family and I are excited to return to Houston and I’m truly humbled to come back to UTHealth Houston with an opportunity to provide specialized care for the people of this region and contribute to the growth of our urology department,” he said.
As a reconstructive urologist, Benson cares for patients with a wide variety of urological conditions that impact quality of life. This includes urethral stricture disease, urologic issues in cancer survivors related to surgery and/or radiation, male stress incontinence, urinary tract fistula, neurogenic bladder, and reconstruction following genital and urinary tract injuries. Additionally, he works alongside other UT Physicians and UTHealth Houston experts, such as Daniel J. Freet, MD, Run Wang, MD, and Alvaro L. Montealegre, MD, among others, as part of the multidisciplinary Transgender Medicine and Surgery Program.
“I believe in an evidence-based and patient-centered approach for the care of my patients, and prioritized, individualized care and shared decision making, with the overarching goal of improving a person’s quality of life,” he shared. “The most rewarding part of my job is helping patients and the real impact this can have on them, as well as their loved ones.”
Currently, Benson sees patients at the UT Physicians Urology – Texas Medical Center location. For additional information on the clinic or to schedule an appointment, you may visit this page, or call 832-325-7280.
